Port Coquitlam, B.C.
We believe in achieving high academic standards which also encourage creativity and individuality in each child. We believe that a child’s education develops more fully in an atmosphere that reflects Christian values such as mutual respect, co-operation and consideration.
We share in the mission of the Catholic Church to “… proclaim and build the Kingdom of God”. We share in the commitment to “…excellence in catholicity and in all areas that promote the development of the whole child to his or her full potential” as set out by the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese. We strive to “…develop Christian leaders, responsible citizens and life-long learners”. (Mission Statement – CISVA)
As dedicated and responsible professionals, parents, and students, we will exemplify our philosophy by taking the inspiration of our teacher Jesus and the gospel spirit and translating it into all facets of school life.
Our Lady of the Assumption School was established in 1982. It opened with Kindergarten and grade one children attending classes in the parish portable while the actual school building was being constructed. March 17, 1983 marked the official opening of the school building. An addition was constructed in 1992 creating space for a new kindergarten classroom, a music room and computer lab as well as a Learning Support Area.
The founding pastor was Father Christopher Vermeulen who with the founding parents fulfilled their dream of building a Catholic School for the parish children. In 1993, Father Vermeulen retired and Father Rufin Mika became pastor for the next thirteen years. During this time Archbishop Carney High School was opened on Our Lady of the Assumption Parish property with three portables. The grade eight students from Our Lady of the Assumption and other ‘feeder’ parishes shared facilities with the elementary school children. Mr. Peter Dawe was the founding Principal of Carney High. In 2006, Father Mika was transferred to Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish in Aldergrove. Father Ron Thompson was assigned to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.
Mrs. Muriel Walters was the head teacher of Assumption School in its first two years of operation. Mrs. Stephanie Reinhart was named Principal in 1984. In 1989 Mr. John van der Pauw became Principal. The school presently has 244 students from grades K to 7.
The school comes under the authority of the Catholic Independent Schools of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Each school has a Parish Education Committee that represents the CISVA at the local level. Mrs. Shirley Armilotta was the first Chairperson of the Parish Education Committee.
